 **Winemaker Notes:**  

 The grapes used to produce this wine are from the best appellations in Napa Valley from the best growers. A list of our growers include: Sequoia Grove estate vineyard, Tonella estate vineyard, Stagecoach, Morisoli, Lamoreaux, Henry Brothers, Healy vineyard, Beckstoffer George III, and Christian.

 Each site was harvested at its ideal brix, ranging between 23 and 27, and picked over the course of six weeks, from September 19 – October 31. The fruit was hand sorted before undergoing a 1-2 day cold soak. The lots were individually fermented in small batches, with gentle pumpovers 2-3 times per day. The wine underwent malolactic fermentation in barrel, where it was aged for 20 months before being racked and bottled in August 2014.

 **Tasting Notes:**  

 Dark red in color, on the nose the wine smells of blackberry, black cherry, and clove, with background notes of coffee and vanilla. On the palate, the wine bursts with fresh fruit, cherries, and blackberries. A seamless arc of flavor flows into a slightly smoky finish.

Situated in the mountains above Conn Valley and near the base of Howell Mountain, the Buehler Estate
vineyards are planted primarily to Cabernet Sauvignon. The juxtaposed topography of steeply sloped
hillsides with eastern exposures against very gently sloping hills with southern and southwestern
exposures hints at the tumultuous geologic past of the Estate; extensive faulting resulted in at least
three distinct soil types. Not surprisingly, grapes grown on the different soils give different
characteristics to the finished wines; these differences are often as great as the differences across
various Bordeaux varieties and allow us to blend within the variety of Cabernet Sauvignon to craft a
truly multi-faceted Estate wine.

**Winemaker Notes:**  

As always, both red-fruited and black-fruited (unusual for the current popular style of this variety), slightly herbal with mouth-watering acidity, this is a very food friendly expression of Cabernet Sauvignon. Having worked with the variety in the region since the late 1970’s this is what I think of as a classic, traditional expression of Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. While 100% varietal from Scherrer Vineyard, this part of the vineyard speaks more of the region than the specific site, so I ‘only’ label it such. It relies about as much on acidity as tannin for its ‘angles/structure’ which is rare for local Cabernet Sauvignon anymore and makes this more food friendly than most. While we release this to restaurants and wine shops sooner than the vineyard designate, this ages really well too and may well be the more versatile of the two. 250 cases produced.

 **Tasting Notes:**  

Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is typically one of the softer, rounder manifestations of the varietal. This is the more open-structured of our two Cabernet bottlings, which reveals its accessible, yet substantial and age-worthy personality. Rich, plummy, lightly herbal, and toasty, with mild cassis character, this unfined, unfiltered wine will complement a wide variety of foods for many years.

There are incredible aromatics on this Cabernet. Dusted summer blackberries and creme de cassis. Delicate fine-tuned French oak strikes a perfect balance, never overshadowing the fruit. Martin Ray's Stags Leap Cabernet Sauvignon is often defined by its subtlety in contrast to the much more immodest mountain Cabernets, with already matured ripe red cherries, floral violets and aromatic baking spices reminiscent of nutmeg and cloves. As is typical of the Stags Leap District Cabernet, it is always the first out of the gate with an early appreciable mellowing of its tannins and forward presentation of its bright red fruit.
We sourced our 2016 Stags Leap District Cabernet Sauvignon from a collection of tiny vineyard blocks encompassing several row orientations and slopes, all carefully planted to optimize sun exposure. The soil in the Stags Leap District is composed of ancient volcanic alluvial runoff which produces low yields with great intensity and flavor.

The Aligoté vines of "Les Moutots" have an average age of 50 years old and display extraordinary minerality and freshness.

Heavy spring rains enriched the soils and delayed bud break by a few weeks. A heat spike in June, followed by warm weather, brought even veraison throughout the vineyards. A cooling trend and touch of rain in mid-September created ideal conditions for the 2019 harvest which is considered a near-perfect vintage.

This family owned estate in Maremma Toscana began wine production under the leadership of Lorenzo Zonin in 2000. According to the Wine Spectator and
the Wine Advocate, Lorenzo Zonin is making some of the most fascinating wines in Maremma. The property stretches out over 110 acres, 37 acres are planted with vines, 5 acres with olive trees and 50 acres with cereal crops and sunflowers. Amaranto is a shade of red, similar to that of this wine, which takes its name from a scarlet plant that the Ancient Greeks called ‘amarantos’ (‘which doesn’t fade’). It therefore represented all those genuine, sacred and timeless qualities that still permeate land and vines. Podere San Cristoforo is characterized by the constant presence of breezes blowing from the sea, keeping the grapes healthy and moderating the high summer temperatures. These grapes are souced from Marolli vineyard, with a density of 4.850 vines/hectare. The vines are on average 21 years and yield 7 tonnes/hectare.

It’s a fully integrated farm and winery, devoted to regenerative, holistic farming and a bounty of produce: from honey and olive oil to beautiful, naturally-made wine. A look at their minimalist website finds treatises on wine interwoven with discourses on impressionist painters, classical music, and philosophy.

Winemaker Notes:
The flagship wine of the Bastianich estate, Vespa Bianco was created to showcase the power and evolution that a great Friulian white can have. Consisting of equal parts Sauvignon and Chardonnay with a measure of Picolit, Vespa becomes more than a sum of its parts, a wine of uncommon complexity and longevity. Layers of fruit supported by a lovely vein of minerality which gives the wine notable continuity on the palate as well as a long, clean finish... Clearly has the stuffing to develop further complexity in bottle.

Oh, Merlot, where do we even begin? This grape variety is a superstar of the wine world, with a personality as smooth and fruity as the wine it produces. 

For $35 a bottle snag a bottle of Merlot for a taste of this wonderfully versatile grape. After all, Merlot can produce everything from light, fruity wines to full-bodied, complex wines that can age for years. 

Coming in from St-Émilion is the 100 point (JD) 2018 Château Angélus Bordeaux Blend - a fresh, elegant wine with 65% Merlot and 35% Cabernet Franc bursting with vibrant dark berries and a creamy tannin structure. This $555 bottle is the epitome of Right Bank style - soft and approachable with a lush, fruity flavor and velvety Merlot texture. 

What really sets Merlot apart is its history and tradition. Its name comes from merle meaning “blackbird” in French - so named because of its dark color like a blackbird’s feathers. These black grapes can be traced back in Bordeaux to at least the 18th century where it first rose in popularity as a blending grape. The soft, fruity character of Merlot made it a perfect complement to the more tannic Cabernet Sauvignon grape. 

Over time, Merlot began to gain popularity as a varietal wine on its own - particularly in the United States. First brought to the US in the mid-19th century, it wasn’t until the 1980s and 1990s that it began to gain traction as a single variety wine. 

In 1970s California, Cabernet Sauvignon was the overwhelmingly dominant grape - tannic and boisterous it certainly had its fans! But what about something softer? More approachable for wine lovers who didn’t want something so aggressive? That’s where Merlot came in. Classic Napa wineries like Duckhorn and Grgich Hills began to produce high-quality Merlots attracting a new crowd of wine lovers. 

While it took a bit of a reputational hit in the 1990s when Miles in “Sideways” declares his…dislike for Merlot - it’s bounced back, better than ever.

Tears Vineyard on the Eastern slope of Howell Mountain. With elevation
that ranges from 1,600 to 2,400 feet above sea level, this estate vineyard
sits on a 160 acre estate of which three acres are planted in Merlot and
thirteen in Cabernet Sauvignon. The rocky volcanic soils and weather
conditions are challenging, but worth the extra effort as the vineyards
produce wines with outstanding flavor, intensity and aging properties.

**Winemaker Notes:**  
Grapes for this vintage were sourced from the Emmolo Oak Knoll vineyard located near the city of Napa in a sub-appellation called Oak Knoll. It’s ten miles nearer the San Francisco Bay than Rutherford and has a cooler microclimate. The site was strategically chosen for its soils and moderate climate, which are appropriate for growing Merlot.

**Tasting Notes:**  
This well-balanced and darkly colored wine evokes the scents of saddle leather, coffee and plum, with traces of smokiness amidst its rich fruit. A smooth entry on the palate leads into ripe flavors of plums, prunes and cocoa, balanced by acidity and a grippy tannin character. On the finish: a harmony of fresh earthiness, smoky notes and cocoa's lingering, inviting warmth.

Keenan Winery is located in Spring Mountain District, high in the Mayacamas mountain range above the town of Saint Helena. Eleven acres of Merlot vines have been planted in the rocky soils surrounding the winery, and it is these vines that produce some of the finest Merlot in Napa. The vineyards are situated above the dense layer of fog that creeps up the Napa Valley most evenings. Consequently the vines warm up earlier in the morning and stay warm through the night. The combination of warm temperatures, steep hillside vine rows and gravelly soils promotes more stress on the vines leading to increased intensity in the finished wine.

The 2017 Keenan Merlot is composed of sixty-eight percent Keenan Estate Merlot. Twenty-two percent of the wine is Merlot fruit harvested from the Napa Carneros region. After hand harvesting, the grapes were de-stemmed, then inoculated with Montrachet yeast. Fermentation ranged from ten to fourteen days.

The ‘17 Merlot has been aged in thirty-three percent new French and American oak barrels for eighteen months. The resulting wine shows intense aromas of black cherry, blackberry, and cassis. Complex nuances of cocoa and coffee bean emerge as the wine opens up. This is a “big” Merlot that will age for many years to come.

The 19 acre estate vineyard was planted in 2000 and named Korbin Kameron Vineyard, after a year of meticulous planning, clearing, and grading. It sits on the ridge of Mt. Veeder on the Mayacamas Mountain Range and straddles the Napa/Sonoma county line at 2,300 ft. in elevation, the majority of the vineyard being on the Sonoma side.
