Crafting Schrader’s ‘Old Sparky’ is the winemaker and consultant Thomas Rivers Brown (who the San Francisco Chronicle just named one of Napa’s top power players). Wine comes from the BEST barrels from the To Kalon Vineyard — and as you know, To Kalon is considered the premier site for Cabernet in all of Napa. But it’s not just all about perfect fruit; TRB takes it one step further and looks at grape clones. Sounds geeky, but it’s totally fascinating. He carefully considers which can stand alone in their one wine, and which shine when blended together. Old Sparky is only bottled in magnums, to ensure long, slow aging.

And then there’s Realm, which takes a near-opposite approach with ‘The Absurd.’ The estate intentionally set out to make it the absolute best wine it produces, and it completely threw the rule book out the window.
