A shot at a 2015 Sine Qua Non Eleven Confessions ‘M’ Syrah, worth $650, or a 2019 Fingers Crossed Syrah, worth $450!
Fingers Crossed is the new label from Julia and Nikolas Krankl and if that last name sounds familiar, that’s because Nikolas is the son of Manfred and Elaine Krankl of cult label Sine Qua Non.
With its red and black fruit flavors and signature black pepper notes, there’s no missing Syrah in a lineup (or blind tasting). But it’s also an incredibly malleable grape, capable of expressing terroir while still keeping its distinct character. No wonder it’s caught the attention of winemakers all over the world.
It certainly worked its charms on the Krankl family. Manfred and Elaine’s tiny-production Sine Qua Non wine easily define ‘cult wines.’ Rhône varieties are the focus and after sourcing grapes from throughout California, they found a home (well, one of four) in the Eleven Confessions vineyard in Santa Rita Hills. The couple never repeats a wine name or a label, meaning each vintage generates a completely unique set of wines.
Nikolas didn’t actually think he’d go into wine. He followed Julia to Boston while she attended Harvard Medical School, working at an ice cream shop and exploring the world of coffee before the wine light bulb went off. The two now bring their respective skill sets to their California winemaking venture with delicious results.
