Mystery Red

Crocus is a partnership between internationally renowned winemaker and malbec specialist Paul Hobbs, and Bertrand Vigouroux, whose family has been producing wine in Cahors, France since the 1860's.

Paul's work with malbec in Mendoza, Argentina brought world-wide attention to the variety, and provided inspiration for new styles to emerge.

The Vigouroux family has over 150 years of experience with malbec in Cahors, where the grape has flourished since Roman times.

"With yet another nearly-perfect 2015 growing season in Napa Valley, vintners celebrated abundant yields and a third-straight vintage of world-class quality....Half of the fruit for this vintage was sourced from the namesake Cerrito Block, a meter-by-meter vineyard planted along the eastern edge of Rutherford AVA, with the balance coming from another vineyard eight miles south, in the Oak Knoll District. Dark crimson to black in color, the nose presents classic varietal aromas of licorice, dried flowers, and leather. We employ a modest but lengthy oak regime of 40% new French barrels of 30 months complimenting the nuanced red fruit flavors." –JDB Wines

The Mohrhardt Ridge Vineyard expresses Cabernet Sauvignon grown on a mountaintop and tamed by the full force of the cold Pacific Ocean. The inaugural vintage of Red Car Cabernet Sauvignon shows the complexity, balance and elegance of this Fort Ross – Seaview hilltop site.

We are hands-on farmers, part of a small cadre of wineries in our region who are fortunate to grow a large majority of our own fruit. For several years now we have worked hard to go beyond sustainability and have integrated the concepts and principles of organic, biodynamic and permaculture systems into our farming as we search for nature’s ideal pathways. Our wines are made in small lots utilizing minimalist intervention techniques like native yeast fermentation, gravity flow, and natural acid.

The historic Priest Ranch is now part of the Somerston Estate, a significant property totaling 1,682 acres, with 222 acres planted to hillside vineyards. Dramatic elevations of the vineyards define and distinguish the estate, ranging from 800 ft to 1,615 ft above sea level. In 2015, the grapes for this wine were chosen from three separate hillside blocks. The final blend was 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Petit Verdot, and 20% Malbec.The 2015 Coach Gun delivers scents of vanilla bean and black cherry on the nose. On the palate, there are hints of licorice, blackberry, and roasted coffee bean. The wine is rich in color and delivers velvety soft tannins on the finish.

The 2016 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is carefully blended to achieve power and balance. We particularly appreciate the opportunity to use high elevations (Baker Vineyard
in Atlas Peak is at 1,200 ft.) with their intense tannins and color, then blend and civilize them with vineyards from the valley floor. Windy Flats is on the western foothills in Wooden Valley, and Beau Terroir is in the Napa-Carneros foothills. Beau Terre, Flat Rock, and Apallas are on the valley floor. The Malbec, Merlot, and Petit Verdot elevate the nose and display the fruit and oak spice. The wines from 2016 benefitted from a decent growing season with gentle roller coaster temperatures, slightly less than average winter rains, and a few hot spells.
