Mystery Red

Crocus is a partnership between internationally renowned winemaker and malbec specialist Paul Hobbs, and Bertrand Vigouroux, whose family has been producing wine in Cahors, France since the 1860's.

Paul's work with malbec in Mendoza, Argentina brought world-wide attention to the variety, and provided inspiration for new styles to emerge.

The Vigouroux family has over 150 years of experience with malbec in Cahors, where the grape has flourished since Roman times.

"With yet another nearly-perfect 2015 growing season in Napa Valley, vintners celebrated abundant yields and a third-straight vintage of world-class quality....Half of the fruit for this vintage was sourced from the namesake Cerrito Block, a meter-by-meter vineyard planted along the eastern edge of Rutherford AVA, with the balance coming from another vineyard eight miles south, in the Oak Knoll District. Dark crimson to black in color, the nose presents classic varietal aromas of licorice, dried flowers, and leather. We employ a modest but lengthy oak regime of 40% new French barrels of 30 months complimenting the nuanced red fruit flavors." –JDB Wines

The Mohrhardt Ridge Vineyard expresses Cabernet Sauvignon grown on a mountaintop and tamed by the full force of the cold Pacific Ocean. The inaugural vintage of Red Car Cabernet Sauvignon shows the complexity, balance and elegance of this Fort Ross – Seaview hilltop site.

We are hands-on farmers, part of a small cadre of wineries in our region who are fortunate to grow a large majority of our own fruit. For several years now we have worked hard to go beyond sustainability and have integrated the concepts and principles of organic, biodynamic and permaculture systems into our farming as we search for nature’s ideal pathways. Our wines are made in small lots utilizing minimalist intervention techniques like native yeast fermentation, gravity flow, and natural acid.

The historic Priest Ranch is now part of the Somerston Estate, a significant property totaling 1,682 acres, with 222 acres planted to hillside vineyards. Dramatic elevations of the vineyards define and distinguish the estate, ranging from 800 ft to 1,615 ft above sea level. In 2015, the grapes for this wine were chosen from three separate hillside blocks. The final blend was 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Petit Verdot, and 20% Malbec.The 2015 Coach Gun delivers scents of vanilla bean and black cherry on the nose. On the palate, there are hints of licorice, blackberry, and roasted coffee bean. The wine is rich in color and delivers velvety soft tannins on the finish.

In Washington, which is the second-largest wine-producing state after California, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah dominate the vineyards, but 80 varieties are cultivated. Washington is unique in that phylloxera has almost never touched the vineyards; many point to the sandy soils as creating an inhospitable environment for the disease.

What this means is that there is so much to explore in this pocket of the country — and we’ve made it easy for you to dig in.

Ocelli Cellars in Washington’s Columbia Valley hooked us up with some of their small-production Grenache — the only grape they focus on, in fact. Winemaker Notes:
Moe Momtazi purchased his 540 acres in the McMinnville American Viticultural Area back in 1997, and the abandoned wheat ranch soon became one of the most important biodynamic vineyards in the Pacific Northwest wine industry. Alex Fullerton’s work with these 16 barrels — two of which were brand new French oak — includes a program of 25% whole cluster fermentation. The cooling influence of the Van Duzer Corridor also is showcased as aromas feature raspberry, cherry and cola with white pepper and anise. Inside, the brightness shines with flavors of Rainier cherry and Red Vines licorice, supported by lively boysenberry acidity and suave tannins.

The tannin-acid structure is at once subtle and gentle, propping up a ferrous, volcanic minerality that lends grace, length and even lift to a subtly assertive wine.”

Winemaker Notes:
A study in terrior in one word, Fire. It's more red-fruited than its counterparts, with scents of cherries, cedar, sassafras and forest floor. A tannic component to the texture girds the wine while serving as a springboard, keeping it high-toned and elegant.

The estate makes Syrah, Grenache, Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon and blends."

Winemaker Notes:
Since 2010, ROCO has produced some of our juiciest and fresh fruited Pinot Noirs from this low elevation jewel located in the eastern portion of the Yamhill-Carlton AVA. Tucked just west of the Dundee Hills, Marsh Estate Vineyard starts at a 250 ft elevation and ascends steeply to a peak elevation of 320ft at the end of an exposed ridge line. This exposure ensures maximum sunlight, and combined with soil derived from marine sandstone, gives the wine an intense real cherry and raspberry front with a black pepper finish. A collectible wine that is drinkable now, but can lay down for a number of years.

"The 2018 vintage started cool and wet in February and March, which led to a more “normal” budbreak in April. The season quickly accelerated and was warm and dry beginning in May.
